Big and Small

Some designers think big and some think small, very few think big AND small at the same time which is what makes their designs innovative and experiential on a human scale.
The Italian architect Carlos Scarpa for example is something who
excels in the small. His sculptural details were exquisite and every
inch bore his signature. The Japanese Architect Shin TAkamatsu who I had a chance to apprentice with early in my career also designed "small" - each seam and bolt detail conceived and composed, every surface adorned with their signature forms. And both architects to a certain extent failed when confronted with "Big" projects. Much like Gehry, the big became simply a scaled up version of the small, while neglecting the human scaled details that makes up the tangible experience of a building.
